CHALK RIVER, Ont. - That's actually a nuclear reactor to the back and left of this photo and that's me, inside the Chalk River Nuclear Laboratory, trying to do my best 'mad scientist' pose. This reactor -- all you can see is the foot-thick green shielding -- is the NRU reactor that produces all those medical isotopes but was shut down by the facility's operator, Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. after it agreed it had not lived up to some key safety requirements on the license issued to it by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. The reactor was re-started after the House of Commons overrode the CNSC and gave it a 120-day license. To prove its safety, journalists like me got a rare tour through the place.
