Tom in Pashmul
Tom Michalak is an "ENG Technician" -- a fancy name for the folks who do the camera work, sound work, and editing in television news -- here in the CTV News Ottawa Bureau but right now he's on his second tour in Afghanistan as part of the CTV National News Bureau in Kandahar. Here, Tom is in the Afghan village of Pashmul. For this visit, he was not accompanied by a military escort. "More of a real way of seeing the country," Tom writes.

Afghanistan is a fascinating coutry for me: when the Taliban were in power, Afghan women were denied many basic human rights. They were not allowed to work, needed a male escort or a couple of female escorts if they wanted to leave the house and were forbidden from consulting a male doctor. The recently adopted Afghan constitution says men and women have equal rights but, as Zeina Khodr reports, this is far from the case.
